The two main symbols of Sydney are the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Both are icons of Sydney Harbor and are seen first from the water. Even if you have never visited Australia, you probably have that same iconic image of Sydney harbour in your mind’s eye. The stunning location of Sydney makes the city a true candidate for the title of the most beautiful city in the world.

Circular Quay

The city Sydney is divided in a south and a north shore by Port Jackson. Both shores are linked by the Harbour Bridge and by a tunnel. The waterfront is called Circular Quay and is known for its lively atmosphere and packed with all kind of boats: water taxis, cruisers and harbor and river ferries. All of them ply their trade form this spot which also offers the best classic views of Sydney.

Historic Heart of Sydney

The rocky ridge just below the bridge is called The Rocks. It’s the historic centre of Sydney, because here Captain Arthur Philip established the first permanent European village in Australia in 1788, the colony of New South Wales. In 1970 this area was rescued from its inevitable destruction. Old warehouses, winding alleys, the workers’ houses and rock-hewn steps were renovated and the historic heart was turned into large tourist destination which it is today.

The Opera house

You can reach the Harbour Bridge from The Rocks and walk the whole length of the bridge and enjoy the stunning views across the waters and the harbor. From here you have a spectacular view of the Opera House, which was designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon. The Opera House is located at Bennelong Point. Its high white roofs seem to catch the wind like sails in the wind and the water splashes at its base. It took 16 years to built the Opera House and came in ten times its estimated costs, but stands out as a landmark of the world.

Water View

Take a boat tour to see the harbor from the harbor and visit Darling Harbour, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Manley and walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Walk. And since you are in the neighborhood, don’t miss a day at Bondi Beach, Australia’s most famous resort.

The vast expanses of the kitchen stone wall often seem to maintain a detached character, unaffected by all the fun and frolic around. But don’t let this stoic calm delude you into thinking that the walls in the kitchen are just meant to stand aloof in an inanimate manner.

They are the perfect canvas to bring about a sense of harmony among incongruous elements of the kitchen, in addition to enhancing the aesthetic beauty and appeal of the space. The walls can be the perfect amalgam of functionality and fashion, liberating you from the constraints of prosaic rules in interior design books.

Break Free From The Shackles Of Convention

So you think wall tiles are passé? Well, you are certainly not alone; there are scores of homeowners that seem to treat the joints in tiles with derision. Stone on the wall is the next best option.

Stone is perfectly at home in all kinds of interiors- modern, traditional or retro. Their ability to blend perfectly with the other materials in the kitchen like wood and metal also deserves acknowledgment and inspires a great deal of admiration.

Large slabs of stone may help in removing the specters of joints, but you cannot escape the fact that they are hard to fix, expensive and don’t exactly send your senses soaring. You could opt for stone tiles that are smaller in size, easy to assemble and of course, have a very stylish and classy look.

Get Ready To Rock

A stone wall in the kitchen is certain to acquire rockstar status provided you follow these tips earnestly:

This very natural material comes in a spectacular assortment of colors and grain patterns. In case you are looking to create a consistent look, make sure the pieces come from a single source.
You wouldn’t want stains to ruin their rockstar appeal, right? So don’t be cavalier towards sealing their joints or the application of grout.
While large spaces can allow the warm, quixotic appeal of slate to take over the place, smaller kitchens can sizzle and shimmer with highly-polished stones like granite and marble.
A few coats of varnish are sure to assist immensely in the cleaning process.

So aren’t you keen to propel your kitchen wall to the rockstar league?

Easy Quick 100% Whole Wheat Bread

A couple of years ago I bought myself the Bread Bible and have been regularly making a great white sandwich loaf. The recipe makes two loaves and calls for NINE (!) tablespoons of butter so of course it is delicious. It is however, a time consuming recipe. It takes all day so I’d only make it on Sunday. It makes two loafs which usually lasted about a week, sometimes week and a half. Whatever became too hard to eat was made into French toast. But I know that I should be eating more whole grains. Whole wheat bread at the store is dry and full of high fructose corn syrup. Any half way decent whole wheat bread is pricey and goes bad rather quickly. I picked up some whole wheat flour with the intention of making another time consuming recipe from the Bread Bible. There was a simple recipe right on the King Arthur package so I thought I would try that one before taking all day with the more complicated recipe. I changed a few steps around using techniques from the bread bible, like putting in a small pan of ice at the bottom of the oven to keep the bread moist while it bakes. I didn’t cover it with foil either like the package suggests. I used honey in my bread instead of molasses or maple syrup, two other suggestions on the package. Honey gives it a subtle sweet flavor without changing the color of the bread. I also use my Kitchen Aid stand up mixer instead of a bread machine or hand kneading. Below is the simple recipe I use to create the bread.

Classic 100% Whole Wheat Bread

1 packet active dry yeast dissolved in 2 tsp lukewarm water

1 1/3 cup lukewarm water

1/4 cup canola oil

¼ cup honey

3 ½ cups King Arthur Traditional Whole Wheat Flour

¼ cup nonfat dry milk

1 ¼ tsp salt

Mixing: dissolve active dry yeast packet in lukewarm water. In Kitchen Aid bowl, add all dry ingredients. Add canola oil and then honey. Use the same measuring cup as the oil so that the honey will slide out easily. Add the yeast dissolved in water. The yeast always sticks to the bottom of the cup I dissolve it in so I save the measured 1 1/3 cups of water until after I add the yeast. I pour the water in to the cup to get out the remaining bit that sticks to the bottom.

Using whisk attachment stir on 2 until dough is combined and starts to leave the side of the bowl. With dough hook knead on 4 until dough completely leaves side of bowl, about 6-8 minutes.

Transfer to a large greased bowl. I like to use Pam Baking Spray. Cover with plastic and allow dough to rise until puffy and about twice its bulk, about 60 minutes.

Shaping: Transfer dough to a large greased cutting board. Pound out the dough slightly with your fist and fold into an eight inch loaf. Start with the left and right sides then the top and bottom, kind of like an envelope. Place the loaf into a lightly greased 8 ½ x 4 ½ inch loaf pan. Cover it loosely with greased plastic wrap. It’s a lot of greasing but the dough is very sticky.

Baking: In a preheated oven place the bread in the middle rack of the oven and a pan with a cup of ice on the floor of the oven. Bake for 20 minutes. Turn bread around and bake for 20 more minutes. The bread’s internal temperature will be 190 degrees Fahrenheit when done. I never check the temperature of my bread. I just look for a golden brown crust and use a good thermometer to make sure my oven temperature is spot on.

Let the bread rest on cooling rack in the pan for about 5 minutes, then turn the pan over to let the bread out and rest on cooling rack for at least an hour before cutting into it.

This recipe makes one loaf. I sometimes sprinkle the top of the loaf, just before baking, with old fashioned oats. I use a wooden bread slicer and a long serrated knife to cut the bread. I always cut it as I need it and keep the rest in a sealed plastic bag in a dark dry part of the kitchen to ensure freshness. I usually make a loaf about once a week.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Since the introduction of wall to wall carpet, the importance of a good vacuum has become more pronounced. Carpeting can carry all sorts of dust mite, mold, mildew, and bacteria. A large accumulation of these culprits can be the beginning of respiratory problems for the people who live with these annoyances every day. A good vacuum is going to decrease the amount of these contaminants if not eliminate the problem all together. Many water vacuum manufacturers claim to be able to eliminate micro dust particles which tend to carry mold spores, mildew and bacteria. Many of the major manufacturers started to make filters that are able to filter the smallest of particles, mainly to aid allergy sufferers.

Now that more homes are being built with hardwood floors and an assortment of tiles, vacuum makers have diversified to include the ability to clean different floor types with one machine. Some machines provided more complex carpet cleaning abilities, while others eliminated the need for a filter with its cyclonic canisters. Then the water vacuum was introduced. This product started with a TV infomercial, amazing impressed on-lookers with its sanitary approach to cleaning with no harsh chemicals. In the days of eco-friendly living, this is a major boon.

Now, most of the household name manufacturers are making their own versions in order to stake a claim in this new market. Some of the original water vacuum designers as well as traditional vacuum companies that have jumped on board and made their own version of the water vacuum include:

1. Eureka

2. Hoover

3. Dirt Devil

4. H20

5. Shark Vac

Water vacuums generally receive good reviews for their performance, although the quality obviously varies between one product and another. Generally speaking, allergy sufferers seem to be pleased with the ability of the filter canisters to trap dirt and dust in the water before they have the chance to escape back into the air. Other water vacuum variants such as the Shark Vac have a water reservoir that converts to steam; the steam not only cleans but it sanitizes as well. For carpets, there is an attachment that allows the unit to slide across the carpet more easily, decreasing energy expenditure and more accurately picking up allergens.

Some people have had a problem with the awkward canister designs, but the handle and floor parts swivel 360 degrees allowing the user to get into tight crevices. At the time of this writing, the cost of the average unit is between $150-$250. Commercial options can run as much as $2500, but of course the trade off is increased coverage and sturdier construction. To have a client notice the cleanliness and freshness might just justify the price. However, even home owners will be able to appreciate the increased allergen reduction.

Here is an episode list for this DVD – I couldn’t seem to find one on Amazon, so if anyone else is wondering what’s on Operation Elephant Drop while it’s still on pre-order, here it is:

Elephant on the Run
Park Ranger Tasha has a very important job for delivery agents Tyrone and Pablo (who never fail to deliver a package) — to get an endangered Indian elephant safely to the Wildlife Sanctuary and to avoid the bad guys (Uniqua and her henchman Austin). Really cute episode with great new songs as the two teams race across the savannah to see who will end up with the elephant.

The Magic Skateboard
Tyrone really wants to be a great skateboarder. He may not know all the tricks yet, but once he finds the magic skateboard, he’s going to compete in the Show-Off Showdown.

The Flipper
Uniqua, Tasha and Pablo are the Meteor Watch Squad. But when meteor-obsessed Pablo accidentally spills toxic space goo all over himself, he becomes the super strong, super excitable Flipper!

Super Team Awesome
Tyrone is a tour guide for the world’s only lava geyser, Old Gushie. When a loose boulder in the cavern threatens to cause a geothermal disaster, Tyrone calls for help. Not one, but three superheroes come to save the day!

It’s nice to see the Backyardigans DVDs back on track after the last one was released short an episode and with a 30-minute tribute to the Fresh Beat Band.

Good price – Melanie Toups – Louisiana, USA
Good price and fast shipping. Kids love backyardigans. Age 2 and 4 and sometimes my 8 yr old will even watch it.

Endless “hours” of joy! – Halewis – Brooklyn, NY
As soon as the music starts, the dancing begins. My grand children join their little sister in singing and dancing to every song. The older children lose interest after the same dvd is played for 8 hours “straight.” I MUST BUY MORE.

Here is my top pros and cons:

Pros
1. Very quick to set up and install.
2. Easy understandable directions
3. Extremely strong backing–these will not come off without significant effort
4. I have custom cherry cabinets with thick doors-no problem for the magnetic key.
5. No screws. But there if you need them.
6. Sturdy, solid product

Cons
1. I found (after numerous trial and error) that they do not work with narrow cabinet doors. I have several long and skinny doors that I had to remove the locks on because they did not match up after the install. I believe the angle of the narrow door prevents the latches from lining up straight and connecting.
2. A few of the locks (out of 20 used) did not work properly. It appears the magnetic latch on a few do not sit flush when shut and this prevents the latch from hooking resulting in a non-locked door.
3. No extra sticky back tabs when I have to remove the latches –I have tried 3M sticky squares cut to size and they do not adhere at all. I then used screws and they worked fine. You cannot reattach with the original sticky tabs once they have been removed.
4. Magnetic keys are a bit pricey. I have 3 and keep them close to the most used drawers.

Overall performance is excellent after I figured out I could not use them on my narrow doors and found 2 that did not latch correctly. They are great when you do not want to use screws. We use a combo of the cheapo plastic press latches that have to be screwed in and these. I have put the cheapo press ones on drawers we access all the time–like our silverware–because it is less hassle than to get the key, open the door, put key back multiple times in a day.
I would recommend this product but not for all instances.

These didn’t work for me… – E. H –
I was not a fan of these at all. First of all there is a huge chance I’m going to lose the key at some point. Also, for many of my cupboards they would not fit together properly to lock (I followed the instructions well).

Iffy – D. Darling – American Forces Europe
Couldn’t get the darn thing to work. What really sucks is that once you attach it, you can’t move it around so you get only one try at the thing. I think I’ll leave it up to the proffessionals from now on.

Power Cooking makes meals faster and saves time! Cooking meals “ten at a time” saves both time and money. You’ll have way fewer trips to the grocery store. Even a “quick trip” is very time consuming, plus you’ll have fewer impulse purchases, which saves you money and did I mention how much money you’ll be saving on gas? Many of the time-consuming tasks can be combined on one day, making your dinner much easier and quicker for the next two weeks. Saving money by making dinner easier so you eat out (or pick up take-out) less often is a really BIG savings. Plus, as I mentioned in previous articles, dinner at home, around your own table, really makes a difference in family life. Many studies show that numerous childhood “problems” are experienced at a significantly lower rate-based on how many meals the family eats together AT HOME. Part of my company’s mission is bringing families together around the table. Part of my mission is making that experience “painless” by providing the tools to make it easier!

Helpful hints for preparing:

Clean out your freezer and refrigerator the day before shopping and cooking.
Have a family meeting and plan your two week menu. (You may want to come up with 2 or 3 two-week menus, and than simply put them back-to-back to reduce boredom and repetition. Get your kids involved, have them create a menu for the week, with adult guidance of course to maintain nutrition in those meals. Once you have done the menu plan and the master shopping list, it’s a breeze to repeat it!) Choose dishes that freeze well.
Keep in mind that you won’t have to cook all the items on your menu ahead of time, only the food that needs a lot of preparation (or can be done easily in bulk) will be completed and frozen. For instance, if you are planning to grill hamburgers, you only need to shape the burgers and freeze them.
Use containers designed for freezing rather than cellophane, waxed paper or thin aluminum foil. Using the proper containers will keep your food fresh and help protect against freezer burn. Squeeze as much air as possible out of the container before freezing.
When making your shopping list, check your supply of freezer containers and/or freezer bags. Add them to your list if you are low. (You don’t want to do your shopping and come home and run out in the middle of preparing your meals).
It’s easier when making your shopping list to use pencil by going through each recipe that you select and listing the ingredients (even if you already have them). This is going to be your Master List. You will need to alter the quantity of many items on your list several times as you go through each of the recipes. (It’s easier to erase than scratch off and mark your list so you can’t read it, thus the reason for the pencil).
Make photocopies of your final two lists to use for future menus.
After your list is completed, go through your freezer and cupboards, mark off any items you already have so you know you don’t need to purchase them.
Before shopping, clear off your counter tops, you will need the space!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It does its job with everyday efficiency. You hardly notice its presence. If it is not working properly, it will grab your full attention. Turn it on and a large mess results. Both sides of the kitchen sink may be full of food and water. You have a clogged garbage disposal unit to deal with. Here are some ways that may help alleviate your problem.

Home remedy

Be careful about using any harsh drain chemicals in your disposer. It may damage the unit. It is also unsafe as it may splash on your skin. There is a simple home remedy that might work. It involves baking soda and white vinegar. Take about half a box of soda and pour it into both sink drains. Do the same thing with the vinegar. Let it stand for several minutes. It may take up to half an hour.

Try flushing some hot water down your drains. Did this fix the stopped up drain pipe? If not, you will have to dismantle the drain trap under the sink. Traps are a vital part of your drains. They trap water within them. This prevents bad odors from making their way to your home interior. Drains can contain many offensive smells.

Remove the drain trap. It may come apart easily. However, you need to disconnect it from the disposer. This may involve removing mounting bolts. After it is apart you can clean it. This often solves the situation. If not, you have to trace the trouble through the drain system. This may or may not be a simple task.

You may be able to fit a drain auger in your pipe and clear the drain. Perhaps you do not have any drain tools. You may not be sure how to work on your own plumbing situations. Consider calling professional help. A plumber will come out and unstop your drain with minimal effort, usually. This depends on your situation. It may not be too expensive either. At least you will know why the drain is not working.

Conclusion

A clogged garbage disposal unit will usually warrant your immediate attention. This is not a time to panic. Vinegar and soda may fix your problem. You may have to dismantle the trap under the sink. If that does not work, you can use an auger on the drain pipe. You may need to call a plumber to fix the problem. Plumbers are not always expensive. It may be a simple job.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

3D ready TV refers to those TVs which along with their 2D viewing experience are compatible to offer 3D viewing as well. With the growing consumer demand towards in-home 3D cinematic viewing experience, this is what the greatest TV Makers of the world are focusing. The three dimensional ready TV is the latest offerings catering to the early beginners for in-home 3D viewing and is laying the foundation to develop upon as the 3D content becomes readily available.

In the aftermath of this, the latest trends in case of the 3D Ready TVs can be seen in:

• Active 3D Technology – Philips

• DLP Technology – Mitsubishi, Samsung

• Lenticular Technology – TCL

In case of active three dimensional technology used by Philips for its high range three dimensional ready TV models, these HD TVs come with active 3D eye glasses and a wireless transmitter. These eye glasses have tremendous shutter speed and can alternately open and close the eye lenses of the viewer. The 3D content is developed on a print that is run at a high frames per second mode having the left eye and the right eye images placed alternately on it.

Hence, while viewing, these active 3D glasses with the help of the wireless transmitter synchronizes and opens and shuts the viewer’s eyes corresponding to the image being shown on screen. Philips offer 3D upgrade packs for its three dimensional ready TVs complete with the active eye glasses and the wireless transmitter.

DLP Technology on the other hand stands for Digital Light Processing and is owned by Texas Instruments. This technology is used with small units of standalone projectors and the TVs can have either front projection or rear projection of DLP. DLP can be stated to be the competitor of the LCD and Plasma technologies available in the current HD TV Space.

Lenticular technology refers to the extensive usage of lenticular lenses which in turn creates images having certain depth. That is, these kinds of lenses produce images with an illusion of having a depth which moves and changes when viewed from different angles. Currently selling for $20,000, the 42 inch LCD 3D Ready TV using this technology has been manufactured by the Chinese producer TCL. Known as TD-42F, this model is currently available only in China.

Thus, it can be seen that Samsung, Philips, Toshiba, LG, Mitsubishi, Sony, and all world famous TV making brands are producing 3D Ready TVs for the growing demand of the ultimate three dimensional cinematic viewing experience which all expect to become the next big thing of tomorrow.
